Stretch marks tend to appear seemingly overnight, and there are quite a few myths floating around about how they got there and who gets them. I’ve debunked three of the most common myths about stretch marks in this blog.

Myth #1 Stretch marks only affect women

Truth: Anyone can get stretch marks. While they are more common in women, especially affecting 70% to 90% of pregnant women, men can get them too. They’re also common in adolescents experiencing rapid growth spurts, as well as bodybuilders and athletes who are building muscle and stretching the skin.

Myth #2 Stretch marks can be prevented

Truth: There is no evidence that creams or oils of any kind can prevent stretch marks. Stretch marks are caused by tearing of the dermis. This is often from the rapid stretching of the skin associated with rapid growth or weight changes. Stretch marks may also be influenced by hormonal changes associated with puberty, pregnancybodybuilding, or hormone replacement therapy.

Myth #3 Losing weight will make stretch marks disappear

Truth: Losing weight during the early onset stage of stretch marks may reduce their appearance, but exercise will not make them go away completely. Dramatic results can only be achieved through the stretch mark camouflage treatment because it fills in the contrast of the scars with permanent ink color vs. using lasers, or micro-needling that only help with the texture.

As always, I offer free virtual consultations if you’ve been thinking about concealing your stretch marks permanently.
